What is a Backflow?
Keeping Your Water Safe & Understanding Backflow
Most of the time, the water in your home or business flows in a single direction: from the public water supply straight to your taps, hoses, and appliances. But under certain conditions, that flow can unexpectedly reverse. This reversal is a hydraulic phenomenon known as backflow.
When backflow occurs, it can pull non-potable water—containing everything from fertilizers, pesticides, and soaps to stagnant water and industrial chemicals—back into your clean drinking water supply. This poses a serious health risk to your property and the community at large.
How Does Backflow Happen?
Backflow is typically caused by one of two sudden pressure changes in the plumbing system:
-
Backsiphonage: This happens when there is a sudden drop in water main pressure—often due to a nearby water main break, heavy firefighting activity, or high demand on the municipal system. This drop creates a vacuum effect, literally sucking dirty water backward into the clean water lines.
-
Backpressure: This occurs when the water pressure inside a building's private system exceeds the pressure of the public water supply. This can be caused by pumps, boilers, or elevated piping pushing non-potable water backward into the main supply lines.Because backflow risks are everywhere—from lawn irrigation systems and fire sprinkler lines to commercial manufacturing equipment—cities and counties require the installation of specialized backflow prevention assemblies.
These devices act as a strict one-way gate, allowing clean water to enter your property while completely blocking any contaminated water from flowing backward. To ensure they are operating perfectly, these assemblies must be inspected, tested, and certified annually by a state-licensed specialist.

EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS
UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA
Trained and certified through TREEO and UF
The University of Florida Center for Training, Research, and Education for Environmental Occupations (UF TREEO) offers one of the most widely recognized backflow certification programs in the state of Florida. It is designed for plumbers, utility workers, inspectors, and irrigation specialists who need to test and maintain backflow prevention assemblies.
Earning a TREEO backflow certification requires completing specific coursework and a rigorous practical exam:
1. Choose Your Certification Path
Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (Initial Certification): A comprehensive 32-to-40 hour course blending classroom theory with hands-on lab practice. It covers the mechanics of backflow, cross-connection control regulations, and precise testing procedures.
Biennial Recertification: A shorter, intensive 8-hour review course and exam required every two years to keep the license active.
2. Hands-on Training
A significant portion of the time is spent in UF TREEO's specialized wet lab. Students practice troubleshooting and diagnosing malfunctions on real working assemblies, such as:
Double Check Valve Assemblies (DCVA)
Reduced Pressure Principle Assemblies (RPBA)
Pressure Vacuum Breakers (PVB)
3. The Examination
To officially earn the certification, candidates must pass two rigorous components on the final day of the course:
Written Exam: Testing knowledge of hydraulics, backflow theory, codes, and state regulations.
Practical Exam: A hands-on, step-by-step demonstration where the student must successfully test multiple backflow devices without error in front of a proctor.
